Yeplive Brings Landscape Video And Web Comments To The Live Streaming Fight

The live streaming app battle may not have much room for many offerings besides early mover Meerkat and Twitter-owned Periscope, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t going to try. There’s still some hype left in the bottom of that particular barrel, and Yeplive is hoping to scoop it up by offering some features notably omitted from any of the other current offerings.

Yeplive is a Canadian startup that offers live broadcasts via mobile devices, with apps for iOS and Google Play, with a few differences including location-centric feeds, with maps and pins to show where broadcasts are originating, as well as a full-featured conversation interface available on the web so that anyone can join in the conversation.

Yeplive has GPS verification, meaning you can reliably trust that broadcasts are actually coming from where they claim to be coming from, but that also means it’s an app that’s not designed for users super-focused on geo privacy. The app is leaning on location as one of its differentiating factors, however, so it’s not looking to be everything to everyone.

It also archives content by default, which another one of those features that either aren’t offered by, or are in some ways limited by both of the major competitors in this field. Another big unique feature is landscape filming, which will satisfy video quality fanatics out there who vocally oppose the portrait-only orientation of both Meerkat and Periscope – but this may just be a “get off my lawn” situation, since other platforms popular with the youths like Snapchat also seem to favor the vertical.

The live chat function is perhaps the most interesting so far, since it doesn’t even require that the audience have an app installed, and it means that Yeplive’s can have equal impact across various social platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Google+ (there’s even Instagram support coming soon, albeit for archived feeds).

After a lot of initial buzz, both Periscope and Meerkat have mostly receded peacefully into the collective social background consciousness, but long-term the market still probably has potential. Is crossing feature requests for competitors off a list enough to build a viable alternative to the current leaders? Not necessarily, but some different thinking in the space can only help it progress overall.

Dropbox Now Has More Than 400 Million Registered Users

Dropbox said today that it now has more than 400 million registered users — a jump from the last public figure about its user base in May last year.

Previously, the company had said it had 300 million users. The company didn’t say how many of them are monthly active users, but it still shows that Dropbox’s registered user base at the very least continues to grow. Dropbox’s edge is that it’s a dead-simple file-sharing service, but even something that might sound as boring as that is able to attract a huge audience. Dropbox also has more than 100,000 paying business customers, the company said.

Another vanity stat the company dropped was that users synchronize 1.2 billion files every day. But still, it’s a pretty large number that is technically difficult to manage — and having a technical edge has also been an advantage Dropbox has had over time.

In an interview with Bloomberg West, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston said the majority of its users are not in the United States. “It’s more than two-thirds of our user base,” Houston said. “It’s been that way since the beginning. Most people are using the product for free, and if you need more space you can buy more.”

He also said on Bloomberg West that the company is used by 8 million businesses, up from 4 million a year and a half ago — and that the “vast majority” of Fortune 500 companies are using it in “some capacity.”

Earlier this week, Dropbox rolled out a redesigned Android application, and has actively been expanding its business services in order to diversify the company beyond just a consumer product. On the business front, Dropbox recently launched a tool that enables users to request files from people who aren’t using Dropbox via email.

The company — which has more than 1,200 employees — certainly faces challenges going forward. Its Dropbox for Business product is competing with a swath of larger and more experienced companies, and the way people share files is rapidly changing as more people use primarily mobile devices.

Marketers Will Drool Over Facebook’s New Signup Ads That Auto-Fill Your Email Or Number

Businesses desperately want your email address, but it’s annoying to enter it on mobile. Cue Facebook’s latest News Feed ads. A marketer can buy an ad asking for you to sign-up for a newsletter or request a sales call, and with two-taps you can auto-fill your email address, phone number, or other info you’ve registered with Facebook.

Facebook is testing these “Lead Ads” with a small group of businesses around the world to gain feedback before considering rolling them out. Google has tested similar contact form ads for years, but they always required users to manually enter their info.

Facebook’s ads can auto-fill any of these pieces of information:

  • Full Name
  • Email
  • Street Address
  • Phone
  • Zip
  • City
  • State
  • Country
  • Company Name
  • Job Title

To make Facebook’s ads privacy-friendly, Facebook won’t just hand your info over. You have to click the call-to-action button like “Subscribe,” and then “Submit” your info once you’ve reviewed what was auto-filled. Users can edit that info inside the ads, and businesses only get what’s voluntarily submitted. From there, advertisers can only use the data in accordance with a mini-privacy policy they embed in the ad, and can’t resell it to anyone else.

This is one more part of Facebook’s quest to absorb the Internet. The Lead Ads fits right in with buy buttons on ads, hosted videos and Instant Articles.

Rather than ads that lead you offsite to fill out sign-up forms, it’s pulling that experience into the News Feed, so when you’re done, you keep right on social networking. Removing the click away and manual data entry could drastically boost conversion rates on these kinds of ads, making them easier to sell at higher prices.

You could try to bend this as some privacy attack on users, but it’s not. You’re going to see ads anyway unless you like stealing services through Adblock. You still choose whether to give a marketer your data or not. It’s just way easier to do so now. And personally, I’d be happy if I never had to manually punch my email address into a dinky mobile form again.

Matterport Captures $30M To Scan Rooms Into Virtual Reality

Matterport Raises $30M For Mobile VR

This $4500 camera turns the real world into the virtual one. Today, Matterport’s hardware is a hit with real estate agents. But fueled by the $30 million Series C it just raised, Matterport’s software and partnership with Google’s Project Tango could let you wave your phone around to create VR tours of anywhere you want.

For example, here’s Matterport’s VR version of a San Francisco art gallery I work with called The Sub.

It used to take a $50,000 rig to do that until Matterport democratized capturing interior spaces for VR. It’s sold thousands of its cameras that have generated tens of thousands of virtual scenes explored by over 1.2 million unique viewers per month. CEO Bill Brown tells me “We could very easily make this a cash flow positive business based on our revenue today.”

Instead, Matterport wants to be more than a camera company. Its investing its new round into becoming the software layer that stitches images together into VR. That business is poised to explode once smartphones can serve as the cameras and source images flood in.

You can watch our quick demo of Matterport’s camera and software, plus an interview with its founder and CEO above.

Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 6.01.04 AM

Matterport spawned out of the Xbox Kinect hacker scene in 2010. Founder Matt Bell had been working for a gesture recognition company that relied on a $50,000 camera and expert operators to produce a huge CAD file that could only be accessed through a specialized application. Bell was flabbergasted by the power of the $150 Kinect. He realized the potential for a relatively cheap device with similar technology that could let anyone map out rooms to create 3D models accessible straight from the web.

Bell teamed with David Gausebeck, who devised the first commercial CAPTCHA security system at PayPal. The team plowed through Y Combinator and raised a $1.6 million seed in 2012 from DCM, a $5.6 million A from Luxe, Rothenberg Ventures, BoxGroup, and Greylock, plus $2.8 million more from Sling Media CEO Blake Krikorian and Crate & Barrel founder Gordon Segal.

A year ago, Matterport got serious about the commercial market, and raised a $16 million Series B led by DCM to chase the real estate vertical. Along with courting agents, Matterport targeted the companies that help real estate workers photograph properties.

unnamed

But selling $4500 professional VR cameras is becoming Matterport’s side-hustle while its focus shifts to mobile. It recently struck a landmark partnership with Google’s Project Tango, an indoor VR mapping project that simply uses a smartphones camera as the scanner. The plan is for Intel to provide its RealSense VR sensor hardware, Google to power the scanning software, and then Matterport to stitch the imagery into immersive VR scenes.

Here’s a demo of the Tango-Matterport tech in action:

1st Tango Matterport 3D Model

Matterport will be hiring out a top-notch team to make mobile VR scanning a reality thanks to the $30 million Series C led by Qualcomm Ventures and joined by GIC, DCM, Lux Capital, Felicis Ventures, and other previous investors. The goal is to produce an SDK and APIs that will let other apps host Matterport’s image stitching to present VR experiences to the public.

If Matterport can make itself an indespensable part of this technology stack, it could enjoy a healthy future business beyond slinging cameras to real estate agents. Today when we think of social media, we think of text, flat photos, and videos. But with Matterport’s help, we could soon be sharing not only a photo of a party, but an immersive 360-degree window into what it’s like to be there.

Disney Now Has Its Own GIF App And iOS 8 Keyboard

Disney has now somewhat belatedly joined the ranks of the numerous app publishers offering their own custom keyboards for iOS 8 users with the launch of an iOS application called Disney Gif. The new app is a mobile keyboard extension that lets you share Disney and Pixar-themed GIFs via text messaging as well as email and social networks. At launch, the app includes over 200 GIFs, the company says, but more will be added in time.

When iOS 8 first debuted, there was a lot of interest from users and app developers alike in custom, third-party keyboards for the iPhone. With the ability to extend the keyboard’s functionality, users could finally take advantage of popular predictive text apps like SwiftKey, or apps that let you “type” via finger swipes, like SwiftKey Flow or Swype. But another favorite category of keyboard apps included those that let you copy and paste GIFs into Apple’s Messaging app, such as Riffsy, Blippy, PopKey, or Kanvas, for example.

These apps offer a wider variety of GIFs than Disney’s own GIF app does, but Disney enthusiasts may appreciate having a standalone database of only Disney GIFs to search across. Plus, parents may feel more comfortable letting their kids or tweens install the Disney Gif app on their devices, as the bigger GIF apps sometimes feature more mature content. (While not necessarily NSFW, you can still find results that aren’t entirely wholesome on those.)

Disney Gif won’t really have that problem. Instead, the app features content from Disney titles like “Frozen” and “Star Wars,” as well as ABC shows like “Once Upon A Time” and “Scandal.” (The “Scandal” GIFs aren’t at all inappropriate, despite the more adult nature of that show, we should note.)

Unfortunately, a collection of some 200 GIFs still feels pretty limited – the “Star Wars” section is one of the largest, but has just a couple dozen GIFs at launch. Disney needs to quickly expand its selection in order to be more competitive with the free GIF apps already on the market. Plus, the GIFs themselves aren’t always as clever as those users create themselves from Disney cartoons and movies – you can often find much better ones on sites like Tumblr or Giphy today.

The app lets you browse by emotion or by Disney films and shows, see what’s trending, and offers a pair of $0.99 in-app purchases for premium “Frozen” packs. (Please don’t tell my kid.) It’s likely Disney will expand its selection of paid downloads in the future.

Disney says the decision to do a GIFs app follows the popularity it has seen with Disney emoji. For instance, the Star Wars emoji generated over 1 billion impressions on Twitter in the first two weeks they became available. Plus, the company adds that GIFs and other content help to grow Disney’s social presence – for instance, its Facebook pages for characters and films today have over 1.5 billion “likes.”

Disney Gif  is a free download on iTunes.

Tumblr Launches “Tumblr TV,” A GIF Search Engine With A Full-Screen Viewing Mode

Following the rollout of Tumblr’s GIF search engine earlier this month, the blogging platform is today launching another new feature aimed at helping users discover and share GIFs: Tumblr TV. The addition is a combination of a search and viewing feature for GIFs, which helps you find the animated images housed on Tumblr and then view them in a full-screen mode. The “TV” part of the feature’s title refers to the fact that the interface offers player controls, like play, pause, forward and backward.

While the Tumblr GIF search engine announced a few weeks ago allows logged-in users to find GIFs to share on their own blogs, Tumblr TV is available to anyone, even if they don’t have a Tumblr account.

There are a few ways to use the new service. You can choose to visit Tumblr TV directly by way of the URL tumblr.com/tv, which defaults to showing GIFs that are currently trending across the service – a metric which is determined by a variety of factors, including the freshness of the GIF and the recent engagements.

TumblrTV

You can also reach Tumblr TV by first kicking off a search for a particular GIF (e.g. search from the Dashboard for “OMG gif” or “OMGgifs”). This sort of search query worked well to surface GIFs from Tumblr blogs before the launch of Tumblr TV, but now users will notice that a small “TV” button is available above the search results. This is found next to the grid and list view buttons in the Explore view. When you click this TV button, you’re then taken to the Tumblr TV interface.

With Tumblr TV, GIFs are launched in full-screen mode – which, frankly, isn’t always the best look for GIFs given their often low-res nature. The GIFs play on timed loop, advancing you from one GIF to the next automatically. When you hover your cursor over the Tumblr TV interface, you’ll see the source for the GIF (the Tumblr blog which first posted it), its tags, and the player controls, which allow you to cycle back or forward or pause the Tumblr TV experience to remain on the current GIF.

You can also click on the tags that appear here in order to surf through other GIFs that share the same tag, or you can visit the blog that posted the GIF originally.

As with Tumblr GIF Search, Tumblr TV is built using the collection of GIFs already hosted on Tumblr, as opposed to integrating with a third-party GIF search engine like Giphy. The site today includes over 239 million blogs, with more than 80 million new posts daily. There are currently over 112 billion posts on Tumblr, many of which include GIFs, giving Tumblr a sizable database for its GIF search services.

ExploreResults+TVView

Of course, Tumblr TV, like Tumblr GIF Search before it, is also meant to encourage Tumblr users to engage with the service. That’s why it includes buttons to favorite the GIF or reblog it. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to share the GIF outside of Tumblr – there aren’t social sharing buttons, and you can’t even right-click on the GIF to save it locally. In other words, while the service is available to non-Tumblr users, there’s only so much that you can do with Tumblr TV if you don’t already have a Tumblr account.

That seems like a missed opportunity for Tumblr, as allowing users to tweet or share Tumblr’s GIFs more broadly could increase the service’s pageviews and encourage more sign-ups. Tumblr could even promote its blogging service to these new users as a place to store and save your favorite GIFs.

The company says that Tumblr TV represents a continued effort to expand access to one of Tumblr’s most popular features, GIFs.

TumblrTVDashboardSearch

“GIFs are a core feature of Tumblr, and we are always thinking of different ways to surface and present the popular medium,” says Bill Eager, Tumblr Product Engineer. “There is an endless amount of incredible GIF content on Tumblr that deserves more visibility, and we wanted to create a way to beautifully and easily deliver GIFs directly to our users without any interference. Tumblr TV also allows creators to reach a new audience and engage their existing audience in an entirely new way. It’s another great discovery tool that evokes curiosity and makes it fun to get lost on Tumblr.”

Tumblr TV, like GIF Search, is only available on the desktop web for now, but the company says it’s exploring ways to include mobile as part of the experience going forward.

As Competition With YouTube Increases, Facebook Overhauls Its Video Analytics

It’s been said that Facebook Video is becoming bigger than YouTube, as brands upload more video directly to the social network than ever before. Now, Facebook is catering to the needs of video publishers with the launch of a new Videos tab in Page Insights, which will allow publishers to better track the performance of videos across data ranges, along with other data, in a more accessible fashion.

[Update: Along with giving people who share videos more info, Facebook also announced today that it’s changed its News Feed algorithm to highlight videos people tend to watch full-screen, umuted, in HD. This kind of big data personalization allows it to show the people the most relevant videos, which will help it compete with YouTube for viewership.]

Before, Page admins and video publishers were able to track video metrics in Page Insights, but the data provided was only available when you chose the option to export the data from Facebook by selecting a date range and file format, like Excel. In addition, you could only see analytics on a per video basis, but now you’re able to track views at the Page level based on any custom date range.

Says Facebook, on the new, dedicated Videos tab, Page owners will be able to track views and 30-second views at a Page level, top videos within a certain date range, and metrics for videos shared from other Pages. In addition, Page owners will be able to toggle between breakdowns, like Organic vs. Paid, Auto-Played vs. Clicked-to-Play and Unique vs. Repeat, in order to better understand their own audience’s viewing behavior.

They can also drill down into a specific time period to see the views from just those dates, in order to understand views day-over-day.

And when viewing these benchmarks, Page owners can compare it to their average performance over time.

  1. videos-tab-in-page-insights-views-graph

  2. videos-tab-in-page-inisghts-30-second-views-graph

  3. top-videos-final-update

Meanwhile, the “Top Videos” section shows which videos on the Page are the best-performing based on reach, views or average completion rates during a given date range. This sort of data helps video publishers better understand what sort of content works best with their audience. They can also click into videos to see individual metrics around engagement, audience retention and more.

Finally, Page owners will now be able to see views, reach, and other video metrics for the videos they’ve shared from other Pages, Facebook notes.

The changes come at a time when a number of social media managers and Page owners have been frustrated with Facebook’s video metrics, which have been inaccurate. Many were recently seeing video numbers that were much lower than they were around two months ago, and this caused some concern because it looked like their Facebook numbers were declining. However, Facebook confirmed that those bad metrics were just a bug. Apparently, that bug came about as Facebook was prepping for this larger overhaul of video metrics.

Another recent issue was that when exporting data for extended periods of time, some data points would be missing. For example, a user might be able to export 10 to 15 days of data without problems, but when they increased the range – say, to 3 months – many of the data points were missing.

For those tasked with tracking Facebook metrics like video views, the announcement that the section now has its own tab and an upgraded feature set is good news, as it means that Facebook hadn’t been ignoring the complaints – it had been working to improve the experience.

Not everyone is seeing the new Videos tab yet – instead, Facebook says that the features will arrive “over the coming weeks.”

Facebook’s interest in improving its video metrics and reporting arrives when the social network is seeing a rapid rise with regard to its video content. For example, a recent study of 80,000 Facebook video posts across 20,000 Facebook pages showed that the gap between Facebook video posts and YouTube shares grew significantly in December when brands then posted 20,000 more video to Facebook than to YouTube that month. In addition, Facebook video grew from 3 billion daily views in January to 4 billion by April, reports have shown.

In addition, another report by market research firm Ampere Analysis also recently stated that Facebook will deliver two-thirds as many video views in 2015 as YouTube – or two trillion compared to YouTube’s three trillion. Meanwhile, both services have similar monthly active user numbers – 1.4 billion for Facebook, and 1.3 billion for YouTube.

Craigslist, 3taps Settle Their Scraping/Antitrust Suits; 3taps To Pay $1M To Be Donated To The EFF

A week after Craigslistfinally got its emancipation from eBay, some closure on another long-standing legal battle for the listings site: the local listings giant has now finally reached a settlement with big data company 3taps over claims that 3taps and companies using its data were scraping and stealing Craigslist IP, and counterclaims from 3taps that Craigslist was violating antitrust laws.

In the settlement, 3taps, PadMapper and Lovely will collectively ay Craigslist $3.1 million — $1 million from 3taps; $2.1 million from Lovely and nothing from PadMapper. Craigslist has pledged to donate $1 million of that to the Electronic Frontier Foundation over 10 years. The EFF had backed 3taps in its legal fight against the local listings giant.

“Although 3taps lacks the resources to continue the fight, this settlement provides much needed resources to the EFF, as there is still much to be done on the issues raised in this case,” reads a statement from 3taps.

Craigslist hasn’t made too much of a statement except a short blog post from its CEO Jim Buckmaster titled “Exeunt Omnes” (all leave the stage). It links to the judgements, and quotes from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice on mercy.

Meanwhile, as part of the judgment, there is now a permanent injunction against 3taps, PadMapper and Lovely, forbidding them to use any part of Craigslist’s data in their commercial services.

The resolution puts to an end years of battles — the first suit was filed in 2012 — between Craigslist and startups that were seeking to disrupt the company’s business in the name of innovation, raising questions about who owns data on the Internet in the process.

While Craigslist had come to dominate the local classifieds market in many cities around the U.S. and further afield, a lot of users lamented the lack of innovation on the site, where it was impossible to use modern techniques for more granular searches for apartments and other items on the platform.

More enterprising people saw an opportunity to create new services that presented CL data in different and more easy-to-use ways, which appeared to even be encouraged by CL, 3taps notes:

As recently as 2010, craigslist welcomed innovative uses of the publicly available data posted on craigslist.org by its users.  Craig Newmark—the founder and Chairman of craigslist—publicly invited such innovation on Quora.

Some, like PadMapper, started to pick up a lot of traction, and that ruffled CL’s feathers, leading the company first to send a cease-and-desist note to PadMapper, and then eventually to file suit against it, its data supplier 3taps, and more for data theft and copyright violations. It also issued cease-and-desist letters to a number of other services, which closed down as a result.

PadMapper and Lovely, customers of 3taps, stayed with the latter company as it trudged through the costly process of defending itself. They eventually stayed with 3taps as it filed a countersuit against Craigslist for antitrust practices, specifically pinpointing that the data on the site was not “owned” by CL but in the public domain by the people posting their items.

3taps made some progress: It got the copyright suit thrown out, with a court acknowledging that Craigslist did not own the copyright to posts on its site, users did; CL admitted that they weren’t harmed by the use; and CL rewrote its own terms and conditions as a result (a key change after an unpopular move where the company tried to claim that postings on its site were “exclusive” to Craigslist). Those terms now make it clear that data can be used exclusively for non-commercial purposes. But even with all that change, there was still an ongoing legal battle that was too costly to fight.

From what we understand, while sites like PadMapper and Lovely were named in the original CL suits, 3taps was essentially handling the legal fees and the rest of the case.

So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that on top of the basic $1 million settlement, Greg Kidd, the founder of 3taps who is also an investor by way of his firm Hard Yaka (he was also an investor in Twitter before it was public), will be making a “substantial investment” in PadMapper.

Lovely, another company named in the suit, was eventually acquired by TPG (an investor in Airbnb) in 2014 and has its own direct settlement in the case. We’ve contacted Kidd to see if he can provide more details on this.

While Craigslist was trying to get its copyright house in order, the company was also slowly working on rebuilding its own services, adding more features to its maps, and updating its UI among the changes.

Ironically, while Craigslist might have been painted as Goliath in its battle with 3taps, the company was living with an even bigger presence, in the form of the nearly 30 percent stake owned by even bigger fish eBay. eBay and Craigslist had been locked in a legal battle for years to sell back that stake, which they finally did last week as eBay geared up for a much bigger divestment of PayPal.

Updated with more detail on and links to the full three settlements and other detail.

Facebook’s Snapchatty New Photo Uploader Lets You Overlay Text And More

Face it. Your photos aren’t all that interesting. But Facebook’s going to help you jazz them up with its shiny new photo uploader, which is now available for most users on iOS and is testing on Android. It lets you add overlaid text in any color, instantly preview filters that you swipe across your photos, or paste Facebook’s stickers on top. Facebook offered more standard filters before and had tested photo stickers, but now they live with the fresh text option in the new enhancements tray.

IMG_1164

Add overlaid text to Facebook photos with the new uploader

If putting text, swipeable filters, and re-sizable emoji on photos sounds familiar, it might be because that’s exactly what Snapchat does. Since Facebook’s failed acquisition bid, it’s watched Snapchat grow and grow. Its attempts to clone Snapchat as a whole, Poke and Slingshot, have failed. Meanwhile, Japanese messaging app Line has gotten big on the back of stickers. So Facebook’s simply trying to bake the best of everything else into its own.

Update: Facebook tells me:

“People want to be creative when they share experiences with their friends and family on Facebook. We are rolling out a new place to house all of Facebook’s photo-editing tools, making it even easier to add filters, stickers, or text to your photos.”

Those with the new Facebook uploader on iOS will see a vertical line swoop across their chosen photo, alerting them they can swipe to immediately adjust the shot with “Auto” color correction, “Vintage” sepia, bright “Spring”, golden “Summer”, orange “Fall”, muted “Winter”, and black-and-white “Snow” filters. The swiping feels satisfying and makes it quick compare adjacent filters, though a bit harder to choose between two that aren’t next to each other.

IMG_1166

Facebook’s new filter interface lets you drag your finger across a photo to try different filters. Here I’m swiping from the muted Winter filter to the black-and-white Snow filter.

A flashing magic wand button in the bottom left corner of the photo opens the enhancement tray with tabs for filters, tags, text, cropping, and stickers. Users can tap through a more Instagram-style list of the filters, tag friends in the photos, or crop the image.

Facebook Photo Stickers

The text button cribs the interface from Facebook’s Slingshot. You can type in text, pinch and drag to re-size and move it, and use a color slider to choose a hue. Annoyingly, though, you have to write the text and choose the color with your photo blurred in the background, rather than live on the photo itself like with Snapchat.

You can call this all stealing, but Facebook’s philosophy of delivering utility is basically, “if it’s good for you, it’s even better for our 1.4 billion users.”

Meerkat Outs An Embeddable Player, Hooks Discovery Channel’s Shark Week

Livestreaming app Meerkat has launched an embeddable player so that content being broadcast to the app can be embedded into and viewed on other digital services. The first implementation of the player is with the Discovery Channel, for its annual Shark Week multi-platform event — which begins July 5.

The Meerkat player will be used to add behind-the-scenes content on the channel’s DLive web portal, as part of a round-up of streaming content. Shark Week content will also be pushed out to Meerkat users, via a @SharkWeek account, giving Discovery’s programming another digital outlet.

Streaming content Discovery is lining up to produce for — and Meerkat into (if I can put it that way) — Shark Week includes interviews with shark experts, a live shark feeding from the National Aquarium in Baltimore, shark-related vox pops, and a series of “Watch With” viewing parties with a Shark Week comedian. Meerkat Discovery Shark Week

Quick recap on the livestreaming app wars: Meerkat got an early headstart when it launched this year by piggybacking on Twitter’s network. Before Twitter waded in, and started throwing its weight around with its own app, Periscope. Cue Meerkat falling back to earth with a bit of a bump.

Meerkat hasn’t thrown in the towel. It’s fighting smarter, as well it must against heavy hitter Twitter. Meerkat’s weapon in this David vs Goliath fight is openness, via a public API. Developers can integrate Meerkat into their services — which is why there’s already a Meerkat drone in the works, rather than a Periscope drone, for instance.

The startup launched its official public API back in May, but had already been letting developers dip in in private. The Meerkat API lets developers pull arrays of all current or scheduled streams, plus details such as comments and watchers. The new embed feature removes even more friction to encourage developers to get involved.

Co-founder Ben Rubin said Meerkat wanted “one great example” to get things going with the embed feature, hence launching with Discovery. He added there’s “huge interest from other partners”. No word on who else it’s hooked yet.

Meerkat is also not disclosing active users yet but Rubin reiterated that May was its highest month for traffic yet — more than 3x traffic levels in March.

Hype vs. Core – Core community now generates 3x usage. Last month was the best yet.

Shazam Takes On Apple Music Connect With New Social Features Aimed At Musicians And Their Fans

Music discovery platform Shazam is today rolling out a new feature in partnership with over two dozen artists that will allow Shazam users to see which songs their favorite musicians are listening to on the service. The news comes just ahead of Apple Music’s worldwide debut tomorrow, which will introduce streaming music, radio and other features, including a social network called Connect – a sort of Facebook for musicians that lets them share music, videos and notes with fans.

According to Shazam, the company has signed up over 30 top artists to participate in its new song-sharing feature, including well-known names like Pitbull, Calvin Harris, Maroon 5, Meghan Trainor, Coldplay, Usher, One Direction, Alicia Keys, Shakira, Mariah Carey, Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, and many others.

Combined, these artists have a total of 600 million-plus Shazam followers, the company notes. Soon after launch, Shazam says it will expand this functionality beyond the initial 30 artists to include hundreds of others from around the world.

The company will also now reveal “Shazam Counts” – the number of times a song has been Shazamed – for the first time ever.

The social networking feature will be made available in the updated versions of the iOS and Android mobile applications, out now. To get started, users will have to follow their favorite artists on the app in order to seeing what they’re “shazaming.” This action will also allow users to be notified of other information, including new singles, new albums and new videos, the company says.

03_Shazam_iPhone_Group_EN_final

The feature’s launch appears to be in reaction to Apple Music’s upcoming social features, which introduces a way to follow favorite artists – something that’s available on Shazam as well. Artists on Shazam will now have a new page on the service that shows their Shazam discoveries, their top tracks, videos and their follower count. Again, this mirrors what Apple is launching with Connect, where fans will follow artists and then be alerted to new releases, or engage with content like audio, videos, photos, or even text posts.

Of course, Apple Music’s Connect could still be a hit or a miss. This is not the first time Apple has tried to implement a social layer around music, after all – it tried and failed before with its earlier social network called Ping which shut down a few years ago. Apple is hoping that, with Connect, it will be able to own the relationship between a musician and their fans.

But for now it’s unclear if artists will actually take the time to create exclusive content for Connect, or if it will largely include the same sort of posts the artist is already sharing on other social media sites, like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, for example.

  4. 05_Shazam_Android_Artist_EN_final

  5. 06_Shazam_iPhone_insitu_final

In the meantime, despite Apple Music’s potential reach, Shazam has a slightly differentiated offering by allowing artists it’s working with to share what they’re actually listening to these days. That’s something many artists already like to do – being known as taste makers – and helping unearth new musicians and bands before anyone else.

This new feature also squarely ties into Shazam’s larger goal of being a place to discover new music. The company already offers a number of ways to find new songs you’d like, including music charts, a news feed of sorts, Facebook integration (to see what friends are shazaming), a worldwide map of users’ Shazams, a trending section to see the top tracks or the top tracks by specific regions, and more. With the ability to find and follow artists, get information about their music and the music they like, Shazam is clearly hoping to position itself as a competitor to Apple Music Connect when it comes to music discovery.

That being said, Shazam is also working with Apple Music, as it does with other streaming services like Spotify or Rdio. Fans will be able to listen to the songs artists Shazam by tapping on a new “Listen on Apple Music” button included in the app, the company says.

Facebook Fights YouTube With Big Data On What You Watch Unmuted, Full-Screen

Facebook wants to become your favorite Internet TV by tracking what a television never could. Today it announced a News Feed algorithm change that will show you more videos similar to ones you expand to full-screen, un-mute or opt to watch in HD, even if you don’t Like, share or comment. Those same signals will tell Facebook that a video is enjoyable so the News Feed shows it to more people.

The more Facebook understands which videos are great and which are boring to which people, the faster it will grow its view count, which has already reached 4 billion per day — astounding considering it was at 1 billion per day in September.

Just a few weeks ago, Facebook’s algorithm started factoring in how long you linger looking at posts and videos. Together with the new change, just pumping video content into Facebook won’t get you very far. Clips must be visually tantalizing from their first second, and vivid even when silent as that’s how they play unless you click. To get more News Feed visibility and reach, they’ll now have to be so interesting that people watch them to the end in full-screen in HD.

The update comes just after Facebook overhauled its video analytics offering for Pages. Instead of having to export data to Excel, Page admins now have a dashboard to track views of all videos they’ve shared, measure auto-plays versus click-to-plays, compare time periods, and see their top videos by performance so they know what to share more of.

Out Tubing YouTube

Big data on viewership could give Facebook an edge on the leading Internet video player. YouTube is built as a host for videos pushed elsewhere around the web, and as a destination where hardcore fans visit to see the latest clips from stars they subscribe to. It thrives by being the only place to watch what you want, so you have to come back, not primarily on its recommendations. Sure, it has a personalized home page. But YouTube is not a feed.

Facebook is a feed, and one that hundreds of millions of people are straight-up addicted to. Many of its 1.44 billion users come daily, hourly even, to see the latest from their friends and Pages they’ve Liked. It’s not about any one piece of video content, or even video at all necessarily.

That might seem like a strange advantage for a site trying to show you video, but here’s how it helps. Facebook basically has free reign to stick whatever it thinks you’ll love into the News Feed. Every video you see there is essentially a recommendation. And since the feed is so popular, it knows you’ll inevitably see these clips. All it has to do is figure out what you care about.

And that’s getting a lot easier thanks to big data. Facebook can crunch insanely specific info on viewership behavior to learn what you want to see. Did people watch for 3 seconds? 11? 96? How many seconds in did they turn on HD? Was it so visually stimulating they watched the whole thing full-screen but on mute, maybe because they were at work or didn’t have headphones? Not to mention whether they Liked it, shared it, blurted out “sweet!” or commented an in-depth response to the content.

Multiply that by 4 billion videos per day in an interconnected network where Facebook knows that a video popular with some people will probably be interesting to people similar to them based on all the biographical and other behavior data it has.

Suddenly it becomes quite clear why data-driven personalization could lead to a News Feed full of the exact videos you want to see, even if you didn’t know you wanted to see them. Even if you didn’t know you wanted to watch video at all. No Tube necessary.

Alcatel One Touch Flash

MG-0693-1433867704-660x0-8317-1434511345
